Why should I join?
The Society encourages membership from anyone interested in natural resource management, whether it’s through work, play or just general interest. The wider our membership becomes, the more we will learn from each other about better ways to manage our natural resources for the present and future generations. To encourage a broad membership the Society has a policy of low membership fees and, as far as practical, runs its conferences on a break-even or subsidised basis.
It is establishing the Catchment Management Research Foundation to have the role of:
- providing grants to assist research by students and field practitioners;
- to develop faster and wider methods of gathering & disseminating information;
- specifying and testing desirable techniques in the fields of its interests.
It is hoped that this will be tax exempt, which may make it more attractive for donors looking for worthwhile projects to improve the environment. The Society will fund all administrative costs for it.

Introduction from President
Dear Prospective Member,
This letter is to introduce the River Basin Management Society.
The River Basin Management Society (RBMS) was established to "advance a balanced approach to land, water & natural resource management on a catchment basis".
We do this by being:
- open to all involved or interested in our aims;
- holding conferences on topics relevant to its aims;
- publishing a regular newsletter;
- assisting students undertaking research work at Honours & Post Graduate levels;
- assisting in information gathering & dissemination;
- supporting a non-profit foundation; and,
- being an independent body of opinion.
The Society has about 400 members and is influential in the natural resource and integrated catchment management field with government and catchment management authorities in Australia.
If you are interested in any one of the following topics:
- Catchments
- Land & Water
- Rivers
- Riparian Zones
- Floodplains
- Wetlands
- Flora, Fauna & Fish
- People
- Recreation
- Agriculture
- Urban Development
- Pollution
- Erosion
- Sedimentation
then YOU will be benefit from being a member of the River Basin Management Society.
The Society publishes a regular newsletter to bring members up to date on matters affecting catchment management matters from across Australia. The Society has a web site at http://www.rbms.com.au. We also operate a world wide Internet discussion list under the title of ICM-L. You can get more information on the Society and the discussion list on the internet.
The Society's financial year runs from October 1 to September 30 and normal annual subscriptions are only $50 per annum for Members and $30 per annum for full-time students. This enables the Society to publish our newsletter, provide discounts to members for forums and conferences, publications and student research grants.
If you require further information please contact me on 03 9740 0010 or by email at rbms@rbms.com.au, or send the membership form on the web to become a member and begin to reap the membership benefits.
Sincerely,
Ross Hardie
